The Legend of Laguna de Ortices
Long ago, when the town of El Rodeo in San Andrés, Santander, consisted of only a few houses, Juana Ortiz arrived with her husband and daughter seeking a place to settle. The jealous townspeople denied them land, directing them instead to settle in the nearby jungle. Juana and her family built their home in the forest and placed a metal basin filled with water in the yard. Over time, the basin grew into a lagoon that engulfed the house and the forest. After that, Juana transformed into Laguna de Ortices, while her husband and daughter became other nearby lagoons.
Juana's lagoon was known for its fury; anyone who threw stones into its waters would trigger hailstorms. It also attacked those who crossed its shore with large waves and devoured them. Despite its danger, women from the town washed their clothes in the lagoon, except for white clothes, as Juana disliked them. The lagoon also lured people with visions of golden pigs and babies that no one could catch and showed a golden town during the night of Holy Thursday. However, after some foreigners took stones with gold and emeralds, these visions disappeared.
Once, a priest from San Andrés was attacked by the lagoon while traveling with a young assistant. To appease it, the priest threw his chalice and belt into the lagoon, and it calmed down, although the boy never returned. It is said that Juana, transformed into an elderly woman with long black braids, sometimes emerged from the lagoon and visited the town, speaking only with the priest. Once, Juana asked the priest for permission to move the lagoon, but when he requested the return of the boy, she refused. The priest declared that as long as she didn't return the boy, Juana and the lagoon would remain in the valley. The legend says that the lagoon still wishes to reunite with her family and that one day it will overflow to seek them, taking everything in its path.
